The United States is encouraging Americans and travellers from other countries to visit Sabah following improvements in security and the easing of travel advice earlier this year. 

US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires to Malaysia David Gamble said the more relaxed travel status reflected the improved security situation. He also said other countries were reviewing their advisories and welcomed more tourists from around the world to the state. 

The remarks were made after he launched Freedom 250 Sabah at the state library in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The campaign commemorates 250 years of US independence through educational and cultural programmes. 

Eased Advisories from the US and Japan

In February 2026, the US eased its advisory for eastern Sabah. Its current Malaysia travel advisory places the country at Level 1, advising normal precautions. Islands and maritime areas off Eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau remain Level 2, with increased caution advised due to kidnapping risk. 

Japan subsequently lowered its advisory for coastal areas from Kudat to Tawau from Level 2 to Level 1, including Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan. That revision came four months after the US change.
